We’ll cycle through the Dordogne area, named for the region’s most important river. This area is known for the first signs of mankind and has numerous caves decorated with prehistoric works of art. We will visit the most famous ones at Lascaux and at Roque St. Cristophe.

 

Other historical highlights include the fortified towns (bastides) and castles on the hilltops. These are 14th and 15th century remnants of the bloody battles during the Middle Ages and the Hundred Years War between England and France. The town of Sarlat, with its Medieval and Renaissance buildings, Domme and Monpazier, are the most impressive examples.

 

The Perigord (the proper name for this area) is known for its excellent local wines and gastronomic delights, such as pate de foie de gras, duck and goose joints, truffles and nuts - all of which we’ll sample.

Arrival and Departure

Pick up and drop off at Bordeaux Airport or train station.

 

Day by Day

• Coly (2 nights):  Stay at a lovely countryside hotel. Visit the caves at Lascaux, one of the first signs of mankind. 
   

• Les Eyzies (1 night):  Conquer some hills en route to Les Eyzies, the cradle of mankind.
   

• Sarlat (2 nights):  Enjoy the bastide town of Domme and the scenic climb leading there. Visit the Saturday morning market at Sarlat, one of the best French markets.
   

• Le Bugue (2 nights): Enjoy the ride along the Dordogne river with countless castle views. Stay at the river in the middle of a cute town.
   

• Monpazier (2 nights):  Ride the small roads in the friendly countryside and visit the abbey at Cadouin.  Enjoy a spectacular picnic lunch at the home of your bike guide. Walk around Monpazier or relax at the last hotel. Enjoy a heartfelt farewell dinner.
