Austria: The Tauern Valley and Salzburg

Find unexpected delights in the arresting landscapes, exceptional foods, and hospitable peoples of this fairy tale-like region. 

 

We'll begin by traveling from the Hohe Tauern National Park to Salzburg (Mozart's birthplace) through serene rural landscapes and friendly villages. The towering mountains give each route an impressive backdrop.

We'll also visit the gorge near St. Johann and the salt mines at Hallein. We'll spend the last three nights in Salzburg, with a visit to Oberndorf to see the chapel where "Silent Night" originated.

Bicycling

Easy to moderate riding, average 25 to 35 miles per day. The paths are mainly downhill through the valleys of the Salzkammergut in the Western part of Austria from Krimml towards Salzburg, which we’ll explore extensively.

Price includes 10 days and 9 nights, 4 dinners, and all breakfasts, accommodations in 4 star hotels in Krimml, Zell am See, St Johann, and Salzburg. 

 

Arrival and Departure

Pick up Munich Airport, trip ends at Salzburg hotel.

 

Day by Day

  • Krimml (2 nights): Stay in a lovely chalet hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner. The next day, we'll hike up the Krimmler waterfalls for great views and delicious lunch of local specialities.
     

  • Zell am See (2 nights):  Ride to a lakeside resort and round trip to Maria Alm through picturesque farming communities, green meadows, and small country villages.
     

  • St Johann (2 nights): Ride to the Lichtensteinklamm, a gorge set in a mountainous slope.
     

  • Salzburg (3 nights):  Ride along the river into the heart of historical Salzburg before riding to Oberndorf and exploring the charm of Salzburg.
