This is a magnificent trip through the heartland of Catalonia in north eastern Spain. Initially, bicycling becomes more challenging with rolling terrain and the Pyrenees as a backdrop but later the riding is on the nearly flat terrain bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

We’ll visit Olot’s natural park, which is brimming with dormant volcanoes, the eccentric Dali museum, the impressive ancient ruins at Empuries and many fortified historical towns located behind the coastline. We’ll cycle on small country roads and bicycle trails through woods, countryside, vineyards and rice fields.

Bicycling

Moderate riding, with some tough hills in the outskirts of the Pyrenees, later easier near the Mediterranean coast, averaging 30 - 35 miles per day.

Day by Day

• Olot (2 nights):  Superb start in the middle of dormant volcanic formations in Garroxta National Park. Ride to Santa Pau, a remarkably unspoiled medieval settlement with 12th century church.
   

• Girona (2 nights): A larger historical town with an intact medieval walled center, recently described in NY Times as one of Europe’s hidden gems.
   

• Castello d’Empuries (2 nights): Ride to Figueres, birthplace of the great surrealist painter Salvador Dali, visiting his magical museum is a must. Ride on inland trails along small streams and rice fields.
   

• L’Escala (1 night): Visit Empuries, one of the most interesting and extensive Greek and Roman ruins of Spain on the Costa Brava, only a few yards from the Mediterranean Sea.
   

• Begur (2 nights): Stay in a small hotel with gourmet food located above the Mediterranean with wonderful views, ride to the inland fortified towns and the sandy beaches tucked away in lovely coves.
