Explore the Netherlands, the country that made bicycling famous!
We'll begin in Zeeland, the most southwestern province; here, the landscape and history are dominated by the sea. We will cycle along the ocean paths to visit Bruges in Belgium and Flanders, a magnificent historical town. We'll pedal through lowlands and across dikes, visiting fishing villages and merchant towns like Sluis, Veere and Middelburg.
The area has known many disasters. After the last one in 1953, a large-scale combined barrier, bridge, and lock system was built. A trip to the Delta-Expo will show the engineering prowess and the ecological impact of this extensive project.
In Brabant and Limburg the landscape changes. Instead of fertile clay grounds, you will see extensive heather fields, woods and marshes. Through this land, a network of lovely bicycle paths have been built. We'll meander through Belgium and the Netherlands following the old smuggling route, eventually arriving in the farthest south province, Limburg, tucked away between Belgium and Germany.
We will end near Maastricht, a gem of a town and the oldest Dutch city, which dates back to Roman times, for shopping, dining, and our grand farewell.
Easy, with some hills on one afternoon. We'll ride between 25 and 35 miles daily.
Trip price includes 6 dinners and all breakfasts, accommodations in 4 star hotels in Cadzand, Middelburg, Hamont, Maaseik and Maastricht; 4 two-night stays and 1 one-night stay.
