This semi-autonomous region of northern Spain has a very strong feeling of independence. Catalan is spoken everywhere, and it has a rich historical past. In the 14th century, the Catalan Kingdom had its Golden Age and ruled the Balearics, Valencia, the French border regions, and Corsica. Many remnants of its glorious past will be seen on this trip.

Highlights on the trip are the many (almost authentic) medieval villages like Santa Pau, Pals, and Begur, the Roman and Greek ruins of Empuries (dating back to the 6th
century B.C.) and the artifacts of the great artist (some might say nut cake no.1) Salvador Dali, who spent most part of his life in this region. We’ll visit his museum in Figueres, which is extremely unique.

Nature is overwhelming with a great variety in scenery. You’ll cycle through fertile and rolling countryside. The ancient volcanic Garrotxa region around Olot has an extraordinary rugged charm, and here you’ll see the inside of a dormant crater. We’ll spend two nights in Girona, a larger and very beautiful historical town, one of the hidden gems in this part of Spain. Later, you’ll stay close to the French border in Castello d’Empuries. We’ll cycle through a fascinating wine growing area surrounding it.

Bicycling

Moderate riding, averaging 35 to 40 miles per day.  

 

Most of the cycling is on the gentle slopes of the hills and on the flatland close to the sea towards the middle of the trip. On some parts of the trip, especially in the beginning, are some steep hills which will challenge the riders.

Trip price includes 5 dinners and all breakfasts, accommodations in mainly 4-star hotels, bicycle rental, transfers, a select number of attractions, guides, a support van, and receptions. 

 

Arrival and Departure

Pick up and drop off will be at the Barcelona airport.
